Instagram's Adam Mosseri revealed on Saturday that the maximum length for Reels has been increased to three minutes. Previously, users could only post videos of up to 90 seconds.
This update was released just hours before TikTok experienced a temporary outage in the United States, which was eventually resolved with the help of President-elect Donald Trump. Meanwhile, competition in the short-form video business is severe.
In October 2024, YouTube followed suit, increasing the length of its Shorts to three minutes. However, TikTok remains the market leader, allowing producers to upload vertical films up to 60 minutes long.
In addition to the longer reel time, Instagram is implementing a vertical grid structure to replace the previous square format on user profiles. This move is designed to improve support for vertically-oriented content, which has recently emerged as the platform's dominant format.
On a related note, Mosseri announced the impending release of "Edits," a new video editing tool that is currently available for pre-order on the Apple tool Store. The app is scheduled to launch on March 13, 2025.
